DESCRIPTION: Super FamiCon 2017 Opening Kick-Off Event! It’s the 1989 film that introduced “Super Mario Bros. 3,” competitive video gaming, and yes, the Power Glove to the general population! Join actor Luke Edwards as he takes you on a live oral history adventure of the movie he made with Fred Savage and Jenny “Rilo Kiley” Lewis when they were all just kids. Screening will be followed by a Fan Q&A. NOTE: This event is available EXCLUSIVELY to Star Tournament and Mushroom Convention Passholders only.


The History of Hyrule with
Patrick Thorpe

DESCRIPTION: Dark Horse Publishing editor Patrick Thorpe will talk about the extensive work he did to chronicle the legend of “The Legend of Zelda” video game series. Thorpe was the editor of the best-selling books “The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia” & “The Legend of Zelda: Art & Artifacts,” both of which detailed the comprehensive history of one of gaming’s biggest franchises, which continues to capture people’s imaginations today with the release of “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.” Thorpe will talk about working with Nintendo as well as the challenges of supervising such an extensive English translation of the Japanese text.

PANEL: Limited Run Games & Why Physical Games are

DESCRIPTION: In a digital age where online game sales threaten the very existence of brick and mortar video game stores, Limited Run Games, a small video game publisher from Apex, North Carolina, stands defiant by offering exclusive, limited edition physical releases of games that were previously only available online. Best of all, nearly all of Limited Run Games’ releases sell out almost instantaneously. Limited Run Games’ founder Douglas Bogart will talk about why he created his company, and why their work is important now more than ever.


LIVE PODCAST: The Retronauts Live featuring Luke Edwards

DATE: 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 18th

DESCRIPTION: While highly rated Retronauts podcast is typically devoted to chronicling the history of video games, they will put their mission on pause to focus on the history of a video game movie. Specifically, the 1989 feature length Nintendo commercial/children’s adventure comedy “The Wizard.” They will interview its star Luke Edwards, probing for deep insights like ‘was Fred Savage cool in real life?’ and ‘what was it like to play “Super Mario Bros. 3” before the rest of the United States’?


PANEL: Super Mario Bros. 2

DATE: 4 p.m. Saturday, November 18th

LOCATION: Panel Hall A

DESCRIPTION: “Super Mario Bros. 2” is arguably the most offbeat sequel to a hit video game in the history of the medium. And yet even with its new villains, unique story, and bizarre secrets, the game managed to be the third highest selling game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Writer Jon Irwin embarked on a personal journey to discover the history behind this bizarre best selling video game in the book “Super Mario Bros 2.,” which he wrote for Boss Fight Books with the help of Nintendo of America figurehead Howard Phillips the Game Master. Irwin will talk at length about the game, the secrets he discovered, and the inside stories he learned about Nintendo.

DESCRIPTION: Which costume at this year’s Super Famicon win the highest honors? Find out during the 2017 Cosplay Contest! This year’s contest will expand from last year’s Nintendo-focused event by allowing costumes inspired by video games from all consoles, PC and the internet. This year’s contest will also include a panel of judges, an audience award, as well as special awards given to people for a variety of categories. (Additional Rules, Criteria, and Details TBA)

PANEL: Video Games & Comics

DATE: 12 p.m. Sunday, November 19th

LOCATION: Panel Hall A

DESCRIPTION: What is it like to turn hit video games into comic books? Dark Horse Comics’ editor Patrick Thorpe will share what it’s like to take hit video game properties such as “Tomb Raider,” “Dragon Age,” and “Call of Duty” from their open ended digital origins and convert them to the paper and panels world of comic books. Learn what goes into producing a comic book series from a person who helps make it happen every month!


LIVE PODCAST: The Retronauts Live: “Night Trap”

DATE: 2 p.m. Sunday, November 19th

LOCATION: Panel Hall A

DESCRIPTION: Join the Retronauts as they uncover the history behind one of the most controversial video game releases of all time -- the SecaCD game “Night Trap.” They will be joined by Limited Run Games to discuss how the full motion video game ignited a US Sentate Committee hearing on video game violence and was subsequently banned from toys store shelves across America. Limited Run Games will also talk about how they unearthed the previously banned game for a special limited edition re-release.

PANEL: Writing the History of Video Games

DESCRIPTION: Video games have existed for nearly 50 years and the history of this burgeoning medium is already being written by people like Jon Irwin and Jeremy Parrish. What does it take to be a video game journalist or historian?

PANEL: Convention Feedback with Team FamiCon

DESCRIPTION: What did you enjoy about Super FamiCon 2017? What could we do to improve the experience? We would love for you to tell us! Executive director Joe Scott will be joined by the rest of the convention team to hear your feedback, praise, and even complaints in the hopes of making Super FamiCon 2018 even better!
